BEAUTY BEYOND THE BARRIERS: DC Photography During the Shutdown
When news of the government shutdown first broke, I'll admit—my heart sank a little. Like many DC photographers, I had sessions scheduled with clients dreaming of iconic monument backdrops. But here's what I've discovered over the past few weeks: some of our most stunning work has emerged from this challenge. The barriers forced us to look beyond the obvious, and what we found was extraordinary.

THE SILVER LINING: Unexpected Locations We're Loving Right Now
Union Station – 1st Street Exit
The Beaux-Arts grandeur of Union Station doesn't stop at the main entrance. The 1st Street side offers dramatic archways, classic columns, and that timeless DC elegance without the crowds of the main hall. The architecture here provides both structure and softness—perfect for everything from engagement sessions to family portraits. Early morning golden hour hits these columns beautifully, creating natural highlighting that makes subjects absolutely glow, and evening offers dramatic lighting.
The Capitol Hill Walking Route: Union Station to Library of Congress
This walk has become one of my favorite "location circuits." You're getting multiple backdrops in a single session, each with its own character:
Lower Senate Park offers lush greenery and peaceful pathways that feel worlds away from the bustling city, even though you're right in the heart of it
Supreme Court exterior provides striking neoclassical columns and that sense of gravitas—powerful for professional headshots or dramatic couple portraits
The tree-lined streets and stunning architecture along the way create natural frames and leading lines that photographers dream about
Here's the bonus: this entire route has been noticeably quieter in the evenings due to the shutdown. What's normally a bustling government corridor has transformed into an intimate, almost private setting for our sessions. There's something magical about having these grand spaces feel like they're yours alone.
Library of Congress Exterior
The Thomas Jefferson Building's exterior is a masterpiece. The Neptune Fountain, the ornate detailing, the warm, grey-toned stone—it all photographs like a palace. We've been shooting here during that perfect pre-sunset window, and the light wrapping around those classical elements is simply chef's kiss.
Museum of the Americas (And It's Open!)
While many federal sites are closed, the Museum of the Americas remains open and accessible. The beautiful Spanish colonial revival architecture of this building provides a unique backdrop that stands apart from typical DC aesthetics. The surrounding grounds offer versatility, and knowing your clients can actually explore the museum before or after their session adds extra value to the experience.
WHY WE'RE ACTUALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS MOMENT
As photographers, constraints often push us toward our most creative work. Without the ability to default to the National Mall or monument steps, we've been forced to see DC with fresh eyes. And honestly? The images we're creating feel more distinctive, more intimate, and less like every other DC photo session.
These locations offer something the typical tourist spots don't: authenticity and breathing room. Your photos won't look like everyone else's. They'll capture real moments in beautiful spaces that feel discovered rather than prescribed.
The evening quietness has been an unexpected gift. Fewer pedestrians in the background, less rushing, more space to move freely and try creative angles. Our sessions have felt more relaxed, and that translates directly into more natural, joyful expressions.
THE TAKEAWAY
Yes, the shutdown closed some doors. But it opened our eyes to the incredible beauty that exists in DC's "in-between" spaces—the walks between destinations, the exterior architecture we usually rush past, the neighborhoods that don't make the postcard racks.
We're not just making do. We're genuinely thrilled with what we're creating right now.
