When we first started as a wedding and maternity photographer in Virginia, we noticed something that troubled us. Scrolling through wedding galleries and maternity portfolios across we saw the same faces, the same skin tones, the same cultural expressions of love repeated over and over. Where were the Black couples? Where were the multicultural families who looked like us? Where were the rich traditions of African American weddings and diverse cultural celebrations?
That realization sparked something in us. As a Black American and East African photographers we feel urged to specialize in multicultural couples. We understand firsthand how important it is to see yourself reflected not just in the images, but in the person behind the camera. Today, we want to share why we are transitioning to dedicating our work to celebrating Black, multicultural, and culturally diverse couples – and why this matters more than you might think.
